When to Build a Putting Green in a Backyard Project
Plan construction access before locking the putting green or the surrounding backyard phases. The project may need a route for excavation, base materials, turf, equipment, workers, spoil removal, drainage work, and cleanup. A green that fits on the plan can become difficult—or change substantially—if a new pool, fence, deck, patio, wall, or landscape closes the only workable path.
The right order is property- and contractor-specific. The practical rule is to identify dependencies before finished work blocks access, hides utilities, fixes elevations, or creates surfaces that must be protected.
Prove the route, not just the destination
A square-footage measurement shows where the green might fit. It does not show how work reaches the area.
Trace a continuous route from the public delivery point or approved staging area to the proposed work zone. Record, as applicable:
- street, driveway, curb, overhead, and delivery constraints;
- side-yard widths and changes in width;
- gates, fence panels, walls, steps, and doorways;
- slopes, soft ground, drainage paths, and tight turns;
- roofs, eaves, meters, condensers, and exterior equipment;
- trees, roots, beds, irrigation, and retained landscaping;
- utilities, septic areas, easements, and protected zones;
- pools, decks, patios, walks, and other finished surfaces; and
- places where workers, materials, equipment, and removed material can stage.
Measure the narrow points and vertical constraints, but do not assume one generic clearance proves feasibility. Equipment, material packaging, loads, turning needs, protection, codes, and contractor means and methods vary. The responsible project parties must evaluate the actual route.
List everything that must move in and out
Access planning should include more than the finished roll or piece of turf. Depending on the approved design and construction approach, the project may involve movement of:
- excavated soil, existing turf, roots, debris, or demolition material;
- aggregate or other base components;
- drainage components and outlet materials;
- putting surface, fringe, cups, seams, edges, and infill when applicable;
- compaction, grading, cutting, lifting, or transport equipment;
- hand tools, power, water, and temporary protection;
- workers and inspection access; and
- waste, packaging, unused material, and cleanup equipment.
This is a planning inventory, not a statement of how Oasis or any contractor performs the work. The final design, property, product system, code requirements, soil conditions, and selected contractor determine what is actually needed.
Separate delivery access from working access
A truck may be able to reach the driveway while the material still cannot reach the backyard. A gate may admit a person while preventing the proposed equipment or packaged material from passing. A route may work in dry weather but not carry the required loads under current ground conditions.
Ask the project team to identify:
1. Where deliveries can legally and practically stop.
2. Where materials can be unloaded and temporarily staged.
3. How each material reaches the work zone.
4. How equipment reaches, turns within, and exits the area.
5. How removed material leaves the property.
6. Which surfaces or landscape elements need protection.
7. What restoration is expected after access is no longer needed.
Avoid solving every constraint by assuming smaller equipment or more hand labor. Those options can change labor, duration, disturbance, handling, cost, or feasibility and must be evaluated by the actual contractor.
Treat gates and fences as sequence decisions
Existing gates and fences can constrain work. New fences can close access that a later phase still needs. Temporary removal or modification may introduce property, security, pool-barrier, code, neighbor, or restoration questions.
Before changing a fence or gate, establish:
- ownership and permission;
- applicable pool, safety, property, and code requirements;
- how the site remains controlled during work;
- what posts, footings, utilities, irrigation, or roots may be affected;
- who removes, stores, protects, and reinstalls components; and
- what final alignment and restoration are required.
Do not treat a fence opening as an informal field decision. It should be coordinated with the complete property plan and the parties responsible for the barrier.
Map slopes and ground conditions along the route
A steep or uneven side yard can affect movement even when it is wide enough. Soft soils, drainage swales, low areas, roots, retaining conditions, and wet weather may also matter.
Document:
- visible grade changes and cross-slopes;
- steps, drops, walls, and transitions;
- ground that stays soft or wet;
- erosion or concentrated runoff;
- known underground systems or protected areas; and
- surfaces that may not support the proposed traffic or loads.
These observations do not specify a temporary road, equipment choice, structural capacity, or protection method. They flag conditions for property-specific evaluation.
Locate utilities and protected systems before the route is approved
Access and excavation can interact with buried, surface, and overhead systems. Known utility maps, private systems, irrigation, drainage, septic components, pool systems, lighting, gas, electrical work, and future conduits should be coordinated before construction.
The project needs the required locating, records, permissions, and qualified evaluation for the actual site. A visible meter or cleanout does not reveal every line. A clear-looking strip of lawn is not proof that the route or excavation area is free of conflicts.
Also ask whether temporary protection, equipment loads, stockpiles, or material staging could affect systems outside the green footprint. Access risk is not limited to the area being excavated.
Protect finished surfaces deliberately
A putting green may be added beside an existing pool, patio, deck, walk, wall, driveway, or established landscape. The project plan should state which finished elements the access route crosses or approaches.
For each one, record:
- existing condition before work;
- allowed traffic, loads, equipment, and materials;
- approved protection method;
- how debris, soil, water, and sharp materials are controlled;
- who inspects during the work;
- what counts as damage; and
- who is responsible for cleaning and restoration.
The correct protection depends on the material, structure, loads, equipment, weather, and contractor method. Generic boards, mats, or coverings should not be assumed suitable without that evaluation.
Sequence major earthwork before access closes
When several backyard features are planned, compare their access and earthwork needs before setting the order. The USGA's residential putting-green guide identifies access, terrain, drainage, usable space, surface selection, maintenance, and cost as connected residential decisions. Those same constraints interact with other outdoor construction.
A dependency review may ask:
- Which phase establishes controlling elevations and drainage paths?
- Which work requires the largest or most sensitive access?
- Which excavation, base, wall, utility, or drainage work must happen before finishes?
- Which new feature would close or narrow the route?
- Which completed surfaces would be vulnerable to later traffic?
- Can future work occur without crossing the green?
- What temporary condition remains between phases?
- Which assumptions must be rechecked if timing or scope changes?
This does not create one universal order. A pool, deck, patio, green, wall, landscape, or utility phase may control different dependencies on different properties.
Coordinate elevations and drainage across phases
Construction sequence is not only about moving equipment. Early phases can establish grades, walls, drains, outlets, thresholds, and hardscape elevations that later constrain the green.
Before finalizing any phase, show the proposed relationships among:
- house and door elevations;
- pool and pool-deck conditions;
- patios, decks, walks, steps, and walls;
- green, fringe, cups, edges, and surrounding grade;
- roof, hardscape, lawn, and landscape runoff;
- drains, swales, outlets, and low areas; and
- future phases that may redirect water or change transitions.
A later surface cannot automatically correct an earlier elevation or outlet problem. The complete property conditions and proposed assemblies need coordinated review.
Plan staging and housekeeping as part of feasibility
Even when materials can pass through the gate, the site needs workable locations for temporary storage, tools, cutting, waste, and worker movement.
Ask:
- What may be stored, where, and for how long?
- Which items must remain dry, clean, secured, or protected from heat?
- How are soil, aggregate, turf, waste, and packaging separated?
- How are streets, drives, walks, pools, lawns, and neighboring areas kept clear?
- How does rain affect stockpiles and runoff?
- How are children, pets, guests, and household traffic kept out of active work areas?
- What is removed or restored at the end of each phase?
The selected contractor owns the actual logistics and safety plan. The homeowner's role is to make the property conditions and household constraints visible before work begins.
Preserve access for maintenance and future work
Construction access can disappear after installation, but the finished yard still needs service routes.
Consider future access to:
- cups, seams, edges, fringe, and putting surface;
- drainage outlets, cleanouts, and low areas;
- pool, utility, irrigation, and lighting equipment;
- trees, planting, walls, fencing, and hardscape;
- repairs or replacement of green components; and
- planned future phases.
Record what must remain reachable and by whom. A beautiful final layout can become expensive or disruptive to service if every route is blocked by permanent features.
Build an access storyboard before the schedule
Photograph and sketch the route from delivery point to work zone. For each stage, show what enters, what leaves, where it stages, which surfaces it crosses, which dependencies must already be complete, and which later work would close the route.
Then bring that access storyboard into the Oasis backyard-planning discussion. It gives the property conversation a practical sequence: prove movement, utilities, protection, grading, drainage, and restoration before assigning dates or letting a finished feature turn a workable route into a constraint.
