How to Choose a Synthetic Putting Green System: What to Compare
Choose a synthetic putting-green product as part of a complete, named system—not from a turf sample alone. Before approval, compare the surface's intended putting use, fiber and backing, infill design, base and drainage assumptions, seams, edges, cups, care, repairability, written test or roll criteria, warranties, and exclusions.
There is no evidence-based “best” brand, fiber, infill, or base for every yard. The useful question is whether all components and responsibilities are documented for the intended use and the actual property.
General landscape turf guidance is not enough
Synthetic grass is used for different applications, and a product suitable for one purpose should not automatically be treated as a putting surface.
The Synthetic Turf Council's general landscape buyer guide explicitly notes that its guidance may not apply to specialized putting-green and pet applications. That boundary matters. General statements about landscape turf cannot replace the exact manufacturer's putting-use documents, system specification, care instructions, test information, and warranty terms.

Use industry guidance to identify questions. Use the named system's documents and the property-specific proposal to answer them.
Start with the intended use
The first document should identify what the surface is designed to do.
Ask whether the proposed product is documented for:
- putting rather than general landscaping;
- the expected indoor or outdoor exposure;
- the planned amount and type of play;
- the contours, cups, fringe, or short-game features in the design; and
- any family, pet, accessibility, cleaning, or heat questions that apply to the household.
Do not rely on a product name that includes “golf” or a photograph of a finished green. Ask for the current technical data, installation requirements, care instructions, and warranty for the exact product and system proposed.
Compare the surface and backing together
Homeowners often begin with how the turf looks and feels. Those observations can be useful, but they are not the complete comparison.
Request documentation for:
- the exact product name and current revision;
- fiber and surface construction;
- backing layers and relevant properties;
- roll orientation or layout requirements;
- compatibility with the proposed infill or no-infill design;
- seam, adhesive, fastening, and edge requirements; and
- the intended putting application and any stated limitations.
If a proposal combines components from different sources, ask who has verified their compatibility and which document controls when requirements differ.
No unnamed fiber type or backing construction should be presented as universally superior. The comparison belongs to the full documented system and use goal.
Ask whether the system uses infill—and what that changes
Some proposed systems may use infill and others may be designed without it. The label alone does not determine which is better.
For the exact proposal, ask:
- Is infill required, optional, or prohibited?
- What named material and amount does the system call for?

- How is it installed, distributed, inspected, and maintained?
- What happens if the level changes with use or cleaning?

Base and drainage assumptions belong in the product decision
A surface cannot be separated from the foundation and water conditions it depends on.
Ask the proposal to identify:
- the documented base system and site assumptions;
- required preparation, grade, compaction, and tolerances;
- how the surface and complete system are expected to manage water;
- what existing soil, runoff, outlet, or retaining conditions must be evaluated;
- how the base connects to cups, seams, edges, fringe, hardscape, and landscaping; and
- what changes if actual site conditions differ from the stated assumptions.

Define performance with written criteria
Words such as “fast,” “true,” “realistic,” and “professional” can mean different things to different people. If performance matters to the decision, ask how it will be described and evaluated in writing.
Questions may include:
- What putting behavior is the named product intended to support?
- Does the manufacturer publish a test method, range, or conditioning requirement?
- Does the project have a proposed roll or acceptance criterion?
- Under what maintenance and environmental conditions does that information apply?

Do not convert a demonstration, sample, marketing phrase, or unrelated project result into a guarantee. Without named-system documents and project-specific criteria, a performance number or durability promise is not established.
Care and repair should be known before approval
“Low maintenance” is not a maintenance plan. Request the current care instructions for every relevant component.
The documents should address, as applicable:
- debris and leaf removal;
- cleaning methods and prohibited products;
- brushing or grooming;
- infill observation and care;
- seam, edge, cup, and transition checks;
- pet-related cleaning when relevant;
- heat precautions and use limits;
- snow, ice, stains, weeds, or other site-specific concerns;
- repair methods and compatible replacement materials; and
- the records needed to preserve warranty rights.
Ask who owns routine care, who can perform repairs, how matching material will be obtained, and whether a repair changes the appearance, performance, or warranty. A system that is easy to buy but difficult to document or repair may not fit the homeowner's priorities.
Read warranties as system documents, not headlines
A material warranty and an installation warranty may cover different parties, conditions, and remedies. Ask for both when both are represented.
Review:
- the exact covered products and installation scope;
- the issuing party and claim process;
- the start date and required registration;
- maintenance and documentation conditions;
- exclusions for site, drainage, heat, pets, misuse, settlement, seams, edges, infill, or other conditions;
- whether labor, removal, shipping, replacement, or restoration is included;
- whether self-performed or third-party work changes coverage; and
- the remedy if a covered condition occurs.
Do not assume one warranty term covers the useful life of the whole green. Do not assume a manufacturer document covers the base, grading, drainage, workmanship, or surrounding property unless it says so.
