Useful practice variety on a backyard putting green comes from planned combinations of length, direction, and modest break—not from making every contour dramatic. Draw the putt paths before the surface is installed, keep cup areas comparatively gentle, and relate the shaping to the intended surface behavior and the people who will use it.
That planning is especially important for a synthetic green because cup locations are normally fixed. Once the base, contours, surface, and cups are complete, a disappointing layout is not easily corrected by moving a hole as it might be during routine setup on a golf course.
Begin with the practice experience
Before drawing a green outline or counting cups, define what the household wants to practice and enjoy.
Ask:
- Who will use the green most often?
- Are they beginners, experienced golfers, children, guests, or a mix?
- Is the priority short putting, distance control, starting line, reading break, casual play, or several goals?
- Will people usually practice alone or with others?
- Where can players stand and retrieve balls without crossing another activity?

- direction of travel;
- whether the intended path is generally straight, breaking, uphill, downhill, or mixed;

- pools, patios, decks, seats, steps, walls, glass, and gathering areas;
- likely shot directions;

Review the play map with the proposed contours and cups visible at the same time. A useful review asks:
1. Does each cup add distinct practice value?

4. Do short, medium, and longer relative paths exist for the available footprint?

7. Which assumptions still require product, installer, grading, drainage, or property-specific verification?
Keep the answers with the layout. If the surface system, grading, cup locations, or surrounding yard changes, revisit the play map rather than assuming the original logic still holds.
